Amazing Faith
According to verse nine, what was it about the Centurion that impressed Jesus? What did he demonstrate to Jesus? A Centurion was a Roman army officer who was in charge of 100 men. This man was a high ranking officer in the Roman army. According to this passage, he really cared about the people around him. His actions, found in verse three, were motivated by love for his servant. Even the Jewish elders encouraged Jesus to heal the servant in spite of the fact that this man was a hated Roman soldier. He treated the Jews with kindness and had even built their synagogue. In spite of his position and all he had done, the truly amazing thing was that the Centurion did not feel worthy to have Christ come to his house. He knew that in the same way his presence was not necessary for his soldiers to follow his orders, Jesus could order the servant to be healed without being there. Jesus needed only to speak the word. So he humbly asked Christ to do just that. Do you have that kind of confidence in God? Do you believe that He needs only to speak the word? Ask God to give you this kind of faith, then trust Him to meet your needs.
