And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their region. | Matthew 8:34

Today’s Reading | Matthew 8

People or Stuff?

How do you think the townspeople felt about the two men who were demon-possessed? Do you think they felt sorry for them or did they make fun of them? Did they pray for them? Avoid them? As you observe their responses in today’s reading, you get a glimpse of how they really felt and learn something about yourself. Jesus freed the demon-possessed men and the townspeople respond by asking Him to leave. Why? It would seem that they would have been thrilled by what they had seen. Had they been concerned about the men, you would think they would have gone crazy with excitement. Could it be that they were more concerned over the loss of their property than they were over the men who were healed? Why did they not rejoice with them in their deliverance? Do your possessions mean more to you than people? What item of yours would you submit to damage or even ruin if it meant that someone would be helped? Your car, stereo or clothes? Ask God to help you become a person who sees the people in your life as more valuable than your “stuff.”
