Today’s Reading | Matthew 16
Waiting for Lightning?
What did the Pharisees and Sadducees ask Christ for in verse one? Why didn’t Jesus give them a sign? Had He given them any up to that point? It would be interesting to go back over the chapters you have already read in Matthew and list all the signs Jesus had given them to indicate that He was the Messiah. It would appear that the problem with the Pharisees and Sadducees was not that they had no sign, but their own hard hearts that refused to believe in spite of the signs that were all around them. Unfortunately, people use excuses like this all the time to try to justify their rebellion. You know, “if God would just show me who He is,” “if He gave me a sign that He really wanted me to witness to my friend,” “I need a sign that I should break up with him/her.” Could you be one of these people? What sign are you waiting for? Maybe it is time to do what you already know is right and stop, as a song says, “waiting for lightning.” Spend time today reflecting on the signs you already see that indicate what God wants you to do, and respond to them! Are you ready?
