Today’s Reading | Matthew 20
True Servanthood
What request did James and John’s mother make to Christ in verse 21? Was it wrong to ask for those positions? By her question, she is stating that she wants her two boys to have the most important positions in Christ’s kingdom. Why do you think the other disciples got angry when they heard what James and John had requested? It may be because James and John beat them to the punch. They wanted the important positions for themselves. If James and John got to sit on the left and right, then the other disciples would have lesser positions. Have you ever noticed how hard it is to find people to do things which get little or no recognition or honor? How much of what you do in your unit is based on an attitude of simply serving people? Christ communicated that it is wrong to always selfishly seek positions of honor and to desire to be first while being unwilling to serve others and go last. In what ways have you put others first? What can you do in your unit or circle of influence that requires being a servant? Begin now seeking to serve others and not promote yourself above them.
