Today’s Reading | 2 Peter 2:13-22
False Teachers
What can you learn about false teachers from this passage in 2 Peter? Certainly one thing we can learn is that God has a very grim view of them. Another thing we see in these verses is the list of the characteristics of false teachers. Did you notice them? The first is that they take real Christian fellowship and distort it in order to practice their ungodliness. Opportunities that are meant to be good times of fellowship become times for these false teachers to indulge their flesh. A second characteristic is that they use their positions and abilities to do spiritual work for personal gain. Their true motivation is to make money, not helping people. Although they had, at one time, displayed an appearance of godliness, the pattern of their lives illustrates that their true nature is far from God. We need to be careful in whom we place our trust and whose example we follow. In fact, we need to examine our teachers to make sure they are truly living according to God’s standard. It is a blessing to have a teacher who is not like the men in this chapter. If your teacher is a godly man, write and thank him. It will encourage him!
