Impact of Prejudice
Circle the names of the disciples who were called in this section? What were they like? As you read through the Gospels, you find they were ordinary people with the same strengths and weaknesses we have. In this passage we see Nathanael demonstrate a glaring and obvious sin. Did you notice it? It was prejudice. He didn’t want to come with Philip to meet Christ because Jesus Christ was from Nazareth (vs46). Even during the time of Christ, people judged others based on origin, color of skin and manner of dress. It would have been a tragedy to have missed an opportunity to be impacted by the message of Christ because the person who could share or the one who needed to hear was hindered by prejudice. Prejudice destroys what Christ came to do. In what ways do you or your youth group demonstrate prejudice? Ask God to enable you, and help your group, view people as God does. Thank God for teaching us through the example of Nathanael that He does break down the walls of prejudice and uses us to impact others. How do you need to change?
