Today’s Reading | John 14

Obey Commands

What is the difference between a command and a teaching? In today’s reading, we see how our obedience to both, demonstrates how much we truly love God. Commands are the direct admonitions. Examples would be do not lie, do not commit adultery, etc. How well do you obey Jesus’ commands? Do you even know what they are? To know His commands you must take the time to read His Words. It means making personal devotions the primary goal of one’s life. How well do you obey Jesus’ teachings? His teachings go another step. They are not direct commands but those things He taught out of the Scriptures – to love your neighbor, to give to the Lord’s work, to forgive those who have sinned against you, to serve others, you are the light of the world, etc. Does your life reflect the obedience to His teachings as well as His commands? Does it demonstrate that you truly love Jesus? Are you being obedient in those areas that you know Christ has commanded you? How are you doing in those areas in which He has been teaching you? In what areas do you need to improve?
