Evaluation Giving
Why was Jesus so impressed with what the widow gave in today’s reading? In what way was her offering different from the offerings of the rich? This section of Scripture gives us an important and also encouraging principle. Jesus was not impressed with the amount that the widow gave, but with the heart in which it was given and with how much she gave in relationship to how much she had. She gave it because she wanted to, and it was all she had to give. Although the rich people gave much more than the poor widow, Christ knew how wealthy they were and how little she had. When Christ compared what they had against what she gave, He concluded that she gave much more. If that same standard were applied to your giving, how did God feel about what you gave in church this past Sunday? How does He feel about the amount you have given to your church this past year? Maybe today would be a good time for you to think about what you give and how to be sure that it is pleasing to God. Starting this Sunday, give God what He would be pleased with in light of what He has given you. He is watching you!
