Today’s Reading | Hebrews 7
Result of Change
What does verse twleve of today’s reading mean when it says that because of a new priesthood the law has changed? A closer look reveals the answer. The word translated “change” in this verse means to put one thing in the place of another. The point is that Christianity has been put in the place of Judaism. Jesus’ Priesthood was not “added” to the Old Testament line of Aaron; He “replaced” it. The ceremonial system of the law was changed since Jesus Christ had become the High Priest. God’s moral law, however, did not change. God’s standard of righteousness remained the same. While we no longer need to go to the Temple to offer our sacrifices under the ceremonial law, the definition of sin, the moral law, remains the same. In fact, under the new system of Christ, the moral law of God has been strengthened. It is now a higher standard of righteousness. Now we are accountable for our attitudes and motivations, not just our actions. We now have direct access to God. We now can have full and complete forgiveness of sins. Jesus Christ has done what the law could not. Jesus has taken the place of the old system.
